Chris began his television career as a trainee vision mixer at Thames TV followed by stint as a researcher on the children’s programme Magpie but had then taken a break to work in the arts. By 1980 he was running the Bluecoat Arts Centre in Liverpool when he was headhunted to become assistant manager of the new Granada studio in Exchange Flags, alongside the new manager David Highet. After a few months he was invited to join the Granada Foundation and to take charge of the company’s art collection. A year on he was asked to become head of researchers and journalists. Chris also had a stint as a presenter, working on Granada Reports and later as deputy editor of Granada News. He left the company in the early 1990s, much at odds with the direction the company was taking under Charles Allen.
