He would quickly become a producer on World In Action. After making a number of World In Action programmes he moved to local programmes where he became editor of Granada Reports and a few years later became Head of Local programmes.
He was then asked to take over as executive producer of The Spanish Civil War and went on to set up Granada’s Features Department.
During the 1980s he set up Granada Film and was executive producer of The Magic Toyshop and My Left Foot which would go on to win an Oscar.
In the 1990s he became Programme Controller and later Chief Executive Officer of the company steering it through a series of takeovers and difficult major technological changes as well as the challenges of the 1990 Broadcasting Act. He would oversee Granada becoming the most important company in the independent sector and morphing into ITV.
