Stewart Darby biography

Stewart Darby began an apprenticeship as a messenger boy in the Manchester office of the News Chronicle when he was fifteen years old. He then had spells with the Daily Mail and the Stockport Express before joining Granada in March 1965 as a photographic technician. A year later he became a photographer with Granada’s press office where one of his principal roles was taking pictures of the Coronation Street actors. He then went on to spend many years at Granada either in the dark room on the second floor or out and about as a photographer. During his time at Granada he took many photographs of Sir Laurence Olivier and other stars as well as visiting India where he photographed Staying On during production. He left Granada in October 1991 and spent the next 14 years as a freelancer. Stewart died just a few days after recording this interview.
